Squirrel Trapping

Where to start

Tell the company where you've noticed squirrels, how long it has been happening, and anything you've already tried. Photos and a short timeline give the inspector a useful starting point.

What to discuss during the inspection

Ask which areas need checking, what was found, and which treatment options fit. Have the inspector explain how to prepare and what follow-up may be needed.

What affects the quote

Access to the affected areas, how far the problem has spread, and the number of visits all affect the work involved. Ask what is included so you can compare the options.

Questions to ask before you book

How do you confirm it's squirrels?

Ask what the provider saw and how that diagnosis was reached before any work is authorized.

What will you do, and why?

Have the provider explain each step, the products used, and why that approach fits this property.

What preparation do I need?

Clear access to the affected areas and follow any written preparation and re-entry instructions.

What does the price include?

Confirm inspection fees, the number of visits, and any follow-up or warranty terms in writing.

What to look for

Noise at dawn and dusk

Squirrels are busiest early and late in the day. Night noises usually mean rats, mice or flying squirrels.

A chewed hole at the roofline

Look where the roof meets the soffit, around vents and at gutter corners for chewed edges and rub marks.

Squirrels on the roof

Squirrels running along the roof or jumping from branches are often going in and out of a gap.

When it happens through the year

spring

Babies born in late winter are in the attic. Don't seal yet.

summer

A second litter arrives in July and August in much of the country.

fall

Squirrels look for a winter spot. Seal gaps and trim branches early.

winter

Attics are warm and dry. Expect activity on mild days.

Frequently asked questions

Squirrels or rats in the attic?
Squirrels are busy at dawn and dusk. Rats and mice are noisiest at night.
Can I just seal the hole?
Not until you're sure no squirrels or babies are inside. Otherwise they'll chew a new way out.
What's a one-way door?
A small door over the entry. Squirrels can leave but can't get back in.
Do repellents work?
Not reliably. Squirrels get used to them quickly.
Can I trap and relocate them?
Rules vary, and many states restrict relocation. Babies can also be left behind.
What does squirrel removal cost?
Most jobs cost several hundred dollars, more with repairs or attic cleanup.
